How does period underwear work?

Period underwear is specifically designed for you to wear like normal briefs during your period.  Our period underwear is constructed of multiple layers so that you can feel confident and protected from day to night.

Our range of period underwear is called Flo. It’s been designed with multiple absorbency layers to lock in the fluid, and the main body fabric also has moisture-wicking and anti-bacterial properties to keep you dry and fresh. These briefs even have a waterproof leak-prevention layer to leave you feeling confident and comfortable so you can take on the day.

We know that every women’s period is different. And can even differ from day to day, that’s why we have designed two levels of protection when it comes to period underwear - Light and Heavy Flo, more on this below.

How to clean period underwear

You’re probably wondering the best way to clean period underwear. It’s really no different to cleaning any of your usual undergarments. For best results, we recommend taking one small extra step when doing your washing.

Simply rinse your period underwear in cold water until the water runs clear, then pop them in your lingerie bag and into your next dark wash. At Bendon, we understand that you want to ensure your underwear is long-lasting.

That’s why we have designed two types of lingerie bags, one from me by bendon and the other from bendon.

How often should you change your period underwear?

Similarly to changing your tampon or pad, period underwear should be changed regularly.

The general guidance is that you should change them at least every 12 hours.  At Bendon, we offer both a light and a heavy flow option of period underwear which you can select depending on how heavy your flow is each day.

If you’re new to period underwear, be sure to take the time to familiarise yourself with them at home first, while you are in the safety of your own environment.  Once you are able to gauge the length of time you can wear each level of Flo briefs, then you can safely progress to day wear too.  We recommend taking a spare pair with you, just in case.

Who should wear period underwear?

Period underwear should be suitable for most menstrual flows. But, before you buy your first pair, It’s important to understand your own personal needs. If you have an extremely heavy flow, you might want to trial period underwear when you’re at home for the first time. Take the time to get comfortable with your new underwear choice.

Period underwear is a great option for young girls getting their first period. It can be easily kept in their school backpack just in case. The major benefit is this is a very non-invasive period product solution, perfect for first periods.

If you’re someone who is used to wearing pads, you will probably find the transition to period underwear very easy. On the other hand, If you’re used to tampons, it might take some getting used to. We recommend taking the time to get comfortable at home. Feeling secure and confident in your choice is really important, so take your time with it.

The best thing about period underwear is they have minimal impact on our planet, and we should do whatever we can to help our environment right now.  Wearing a reusable product also means you do not have to pay for disposable products every month. So period underwear is kinder on the planet and your wallet.

Can you trust period underwear?

At Bendon, we have been designing lingerie for over 75 years now. Whilst period underwear is relatively new to the market; we still employ the same stringent product testing practices. We carry out both fit tests and wear tests. Our designers then use this feedback to make final adjustments to the product before it comes to market. So you can rest assured that we have taken all the appropriate steps to ensure this product meets a high standard.

It is completely normal to be concerned with leaking, a common worry even with traditional period products. That’s why we have tried and tested these products with lots of different women. They are designed specifically for menstrual flow, and have four to five layers to ensure optimal protection, with our Light Flo briefs having four layers and our Heavy Flo having five layers.

Are you ready to make the switch?

So, there you have it, everything you need to know about period underwear.

Period Underwear solutions available at Bendon

As we previously mentioned, we have two different styles of period underwear solutions. These styles have different absorbency levels to suit different flows. Here’s everything you need to know about each style.

The best approach is to give them a try and listen to your body until you start to understand your flow a little more. Quite often, people find they need a combination of both types, as their flow changes within their cycle.
